COVID-19: FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup shifted to January 2021

FIFA has confirmed that the Women’s U-20 World Cup, initially scheduled for August 2020, has now been shifted to January 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The world football governing body also announced in a statement on Tuesday that its 70th congress, slated to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will now be done online on September 18, 2020.

The U-20 tournament, which will be hosted jointly by Costa Rica and Panama, was due to take place in August and September 2020. But on April 3, the competition was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

FIFA also revealed that the tournament will run from January 20 to February 6, with the same eligibility rules in place in terms of player ages.

The FIFA Confederations COVID-19 Working Group also confirmed that the 2020 U-17 Women’s World Cup in India will now take place between February 17 and March 7, 2021.

In the same vein, the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup, which is to take place in Lithuania, will now be from September 12 to October 3, 2021.

Several other professional sporting events have been postponed, rescheduled or suspended indefinitely due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
