Nigeria has seen a surge in its daily coronavirus cases since the country recorded the index case of the Delta variant.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 238 cases were recorded in five states, including the federal capital territory (FCT) on Wednesday.
According to the agency’s data for July 21, Lagos, the epicentre of the pandemic in Nigeria, recorded 181 cases representing 76 percent of the total infections confirmed on Wednesday.
Other states that reported COVID cases are Akwa Ibom (45), Oyo (8), Ogun (2), Ekiti (1) and FCT (1).

The NCDC said eight persons were discharged on Wednesday after they recovered from the infection.
Two persons were said to have died of COVID-19 complications.
Since Nigeria recorded its index case of COVID in February, 2020, the NCDC has carried out 2,401,894 tests. Out of this figure, 170,122 have tested positive for COVID-19.

About 164,741 recoveries have been recorded while 2,130 people have died of the infection.
The country’s active cases stand at 3,240.
Amid the rise in infections, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) said states will reintroduce measures to curb the spread of COVID to prevent a third wave of infections.
