COVID-19: Infections take a leap as Nigeria logs 964 cases, 27 deaths

Nigeria’s daily count has increased significantly, with 964 new coronavirus infections recorded in 19 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported the new cases in its update for September 4, 2021.

Lagos, the hardest-hit state by the pandemic, topped the infection chart with 456 cases, followed by Ondo with 180 infections, and Edo with 66 cases.

Other states that reported fresh infections are Rivers (62), Niger (26), Akwa Ibom (25), Ekiti (22), Kwara (22), Oyo (22), Kaduna (17), Delta (14), Benue (12), Gombe (9), Plateau (9), FCT (8), Jigawa (5), Ogun (4), Bayelsa (2), Nasarawa (2), and Bauchi (1).

Meanwhile, 27 persons were confirmed to have died of complications arising from COVID-19, increasing the country’s fatality toll to 2,522.

The NCDC, however, noted that Saturday’s update included a backlog of cases from Lagos, Plateau, and Kaduna state; as well as a backlog of 18 deaths from Lagos state for August 30.

The agency said 2,784 patients were discharged after recovering from the infection.

Out of the 195,052 COVID-19 cases so far confirmed in Nigeria, 182,463 patients have recovered.
