COVID-19: Masari suspends public Ramadan prayers, locks down another LGA

Aminu Masari, governor of Katsina state, has announced the suspension of public Ramadan prayers and Friday congregational prayers.

The governor also locked down Dutsima local government area of the state, where a coronavirus case was recorded on Wednesday.

The development comes one week after Masari locked down Daura where the index case in the state died.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, the governor ordered the closure of all major markets in the state.

“In line with our resolve to lockdown any local government area that records a #COVID19 positive case, we have directed for the lockdown of the entire Dutsinma LGA from 7am tomorrow, 17/04/2020. According to results from @NCDCgov, the area has recorded one case yesterday,” the governor tweeted.

“Furthermore, we have directed for the closure of all major weekly markets from tomorrow. Friday congregational prayers have also been suspended effective from next week. In the same vein, the annual public Ramadan Tafsir and Tarawih prayers at all Mosques have been suspended.

“We have also suspended all activities at Cinemas, Events and TV viewing centers across the state. All security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance on the restriction of movements of persons coming in through all interstate borders.

“We are taking these steps and measures in the best interest of our people, country and humanity in general. We call on our people to remain law abiding and comply with these directives to tame the spread of this dreaded pandemic. #COVID19 is real.”

Kano recorded its first COVID-19 death on April 7, 2020.

As of April 16, 2020, the state had recorded seven confirmed COVID-19 cases, after carrying out tests on a total of 85 people.
