COVID-19: Infections surge as Nigeria records 612 cases in 24 hours

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 612 new coronavirus infections in seven states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The agency disclosed this in its update for Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Since the Omicron COVID-19 variant was detected in Nigeria, there has been a surge in daily cases reported by the NCDC.

A breakdown of Saturday’s report showed that Lagos, the hardest-hit state, recorded the highest number of new positive samples with 483 cases, followed by FCT and Rivers with 49 and 38 new infections, respectively.

Other states with new COVID-19 cases on Saturday include Oyo (31), Delta (5), Ekiti (4), Bauchi (1) and Jigawa (1).

The agency, however, said the cases reported include a backlog of one infection from Bauchi state.

The fatality toll remains 2,981 — as the agency reported no new death on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 42 patients were confirmed to have been discharged across the country on Saturday.

Of the new recoveries, 38 were recorded in Bauchi.

A total of 217,063 coronavirus cases have now been confirmed across the country, out of which 207,703 patien ts have recovered.
