COVID-19: Six-week-old baby dies in US, cases surpass 200,000

A six-week-old baby has died of complications from COVID-19 in the United States.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Ned Lamont, governor of Connecticut, said the newborn was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived.

“It is with heartbreaking sadness today that we can confirm the first pediatric fatality in Connecticut linked to #COVID19. A 6-week-old newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived,” he tweeted.

“Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID-19 positive. This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID-19.

“This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy. This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people. Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”

As of Wednesday, about 212, 980 people have been infected in the US, making it the country with the highest number of confirmed cases in the world.

The disease has also killed  4,759 while 8,805 have recovered.

At his daily briefing, Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, said the state which is the epicentre of the virus, accounts for more than 83,000 of the total coronavirus cases and 1,941 of the deaths.

Cuomo added that more than 6,000 patients had been treated and released from hospitals in the state. He, however, said the number of confirmed cases “will continue to go up.”
