COVID-19 ‘widened housing deficit’ for Nigerians

Kabir Ayinde-Tukur, managing director/chief executive officer of Cooperative Mortgage Bank, says COVID-19 has widened the existing housing gap in Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja after receiving the 2020 excellent award on behalf of the company, he called on stakeholders in the building industry to come up people-friendly initiatives to tackle the deficit and narrow the gap.

“Globally, all sectors went through a difficult year 2020, but this must not extinguish the zeal in us to build affordable housing units for Nigerians through flexible means,” he said.

“The challenges encountered in 2020 because of the pandemic widened housing gap for Nigerians. It is now time for stakeholders to narrow the gap in 2021 through people-friendly housing initiatives.

“CMB will strive to remain outstanding in the housing industry as it continually seeks to provide quality and affordable housing for all classes of individuals.

“True to our goal, the bank has made tremendous effort as it embarked on a national tour in conjunction with the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, sensitising cooperators across the federation on home ownership and how they can access it through mortgage.”

The CMB MD said the award would motivate the bank to step up its effort in ensuring affordable homes for Nigerians.
