The Cross River chapter of the Magistrate Association of Nigeria has declared an indefinite strike over the state government’s “failure to address its welfare needs”.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Godwin Onah, state chairman of the association, and Solomon Abuo, the secretary, the union said the strike will commence on Monday.
The association said the decision follows several strike notices issued to the state government and its refusal to address the requests of the magistrates.
The magistrates accused the state government of not taking “any steps to negotiate with us”.

“We are hereby embarking on an indefinite strike action from Monday, 9th of December 2024 till our demands are met,” the statement reads in part.
“Finally, all magistrates across the state are to ensure strict compliance with this bulletin by abstaining from performing all official duties including court sittings till further notice.”
On November 5, the magistrates presented eight demands to the state government.

The union subsequently embarked on a three-day warning strike after a seven-day ultimatum given to the state government elapsed.
The magistrates are demanding the immediate implementation of their promotion, financial benefits, payment of N200,000 monthly imprest, robing allowance, and accrued two-year salary arrears for the 2019 batch of magistrates.
They also requested the provision of official accommodation, vehicles, and the renovation of the dilapidated magistrates’ courts in the state.
