A coalition of civil society organisations (CSO) says insufficient education for observers led to conflicting reports on the 2023 general election.

In a statement, Monday Osasah, chairman communique drafting committee, said the use of technology during voting in some parts of the country encountered problems.

Osasah said it appeared that some CSOs did not have a niche to focus on while observing the elections, which undermined the principle of observing polls in the country.

The coalition said insufficient observer education led to confusion, resulting in “procedural error, poor reportage and lack of adherence” to the observer’s code of conduct.

The chair also said there is a need to review the methodology used in covering elections.

“Civil Society Organizations must institutionalize transparent communication with their observers as a panacea to eliminate political and neo-eugenics influence,” he said.

“Civil Society Organizations should prioritize transparent communication throughout the electoral cycle, addressing concerns promptly and providing accurate information to the public and stakeholders.”
