Czech’s Krejcikova defeats Paolini to win first-ever Wimbledon title

Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova has won her first-ever Wimbledon ladies’ singles title.

The 28-year-old defeated Jasmine Paolini, her Italian opponent, in the 2024 final on Saturday.

Krejcikova dispatched off Paolini to the crown in a three-set thriller at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

The Czech dominated the opener with an emphatic 6-2 win to claim the first set.

She, however, lost the second set 6-2 to Paolini, who forced the match into the final set.

Krejcikova sealed her title with a 6-4 triumph in the decider.

The victory was the Czech’s second Grand Slam title. She won the French Open ladies’ singles title in 2021.

She followed in the footsteps of Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, to make it back-to-back triumphs for the Czech in the ladies’ singles.

Krejcikova also became the fifth Czech player to lift the women’s title.

She became the seventh first-time winner of the Venus Rosewater Dish. 

After the victory, Krejcikova said the triumph was “the best day of my life”.

“It’s unreal what just happened”, she said.

“It’s the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life.”

This was Paolini’s second straight Grand Slam final defeat. The Italian lost to Iga Swiatek in straight sets in last month’s French Open final.
