Dabiri-Erewa seeks information on Nigerians stranded in Libya

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chair of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM)

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chair of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has asked for details on Nigerians stranded in Libya.

A viral video showed women, who identified themselves as Nigerians, living in squalor and dire conditions in an unidentified detention facility in Libya.

Dabiri-Erewa said NiDCOM does not have sufficient information to rescue the jailed Nigerians.

She appealed for credible information from the public.

“A few years ago, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, I personally sought massive evacuation of Nigerians stranded in Libya because of videos such as the one trending,” she said.

“Mr. President then approved and a high-powered delegation was constituted and sent to Libya to go into the detention centres. I saw one of the most horrific sights of my life. And we brought them back, all of them. They were almost 10,000 and Max Air airlifted them from Libya.

“Unfortunately, they are still going. And apart from the massive evacuation, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has been bringing Nigerians stranded in Libya.

“Between January and September, they have brought back no less than 3,000 people in about 15 flights regularly from Libya and yet we still have our people going there.

“I came out severally to warn… ‘avoid this dangerous path to migration’. Those you saw are those who survived. There are many who have died.

“For those of you who posted the video, I need very important information. Where are the cells they are in? Where are the cities they are in?

“Libya has thousands of cells scattered across the country. We need to know exactly where they are before we can get them back.

“So, please give us the information for those of you that the videos were sent to, and I am sure they would be rescued.”
