No link between menstrual disorders and COVID vaccine, says EU

European Medicines Agency (EMA) says there is no link between COVID vaccine and menstrual disorders.

The European medicines regulator said its safety committee studied cases of menstrual disorders reported after vaccination, adding that it had requested more data from vaccine developers to assess the issue.

South Korea to compensate nurse paralysed after COVID vaccine

South Korea says it will compensate a nursing assistant who was paralysed after receiving a COVID vaccine.

According to Reuters, the nurse was recognised as a victim of an industrial accident, making her eligible for government benefits and compensation.

The victim is said to have received the AstraZeneca vaccine on March 12 and later suffered from double vision and paralysis and was diagnosed with acute encephalomyelitis.

The development is said to be the first case in which a COVID side effect is considered an industrial accident in South Korea.

Nigeria records 565 cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday reported 565 new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

This means Nigeria currently has over 9,000 total active COVID infections

According to the agency’s update for August 6, the new infections were reported in 16 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The states with fresh infections are Lagos (348), Rivers (70), Akwa Ibom (45), Oyo (36), FCT (24), Ekiti (15), Kwara (7), and Ogun (7).

Others are Gombe (3), Anambra (2), Kaduna (2), Bayelsa (1), Cross River (1), Edo (1), Plateau (1), Kano (1), and Sokoto (1).

The NCDC said 86 persons were discharged on Friday after recovering from the disease.

However, three persons died from COVID-19 on Friday bringing the total number of fatalities to 2,178.

So far, 177,142 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Nigeria with 165,409 discharges.

Thailand to sets up temporary hospitals for COVID patients

Thailand has announced plans to set up temporary hospitals amid spike in COVID infections and shortage of beds in hospitals.

Hospitals in Bangkok are reportedly full, forcing the government and private sector to construct temporary facilities to admit more infected persons.

The facilities are expected to start running from next week.

Tokyo Olympics records 22 COVID-19 cases

The Tokyo Olympics organising committee has recorded 22 new COVID-19 infections associated with the Games.

The organising body confirmed this in its COVID update for Saturday.

The latest positive cases now bring the total number of COVID infections as compiled by the organising committee since July 1 to 404.

The figures released by the committee excludes COVID cases announced by the Japanese central and local governments.
