Nigeria to receive 3.9 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID vaccine by August
The federal government says Nigeria is scheduled to receive 3.92 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine by August.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Faisal Shuaib, executive director of the National Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), said the federal government is working on ensuring that more people are vaccinated.

He said 1,978,808 first doses and 680,345 second doses of the vaccine have been administered across Nigeria, adding that owing to requests, vaccination of the first dose which had been closed has now been reopened.
J&J to send 2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to South Africa
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says Johnson & Johnson will send 2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to the country by the end of June — to make up for the quantity destroyed because of contamination.

“We have received an indication from Johnson & Johnson that it expects to deliver around 2 million vaccines to South Africa by the end of the month,” Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa also disclosed that the country would impose a strict COVID lockdown to prevent a third wave of infections.
Africa COVID-19 cases surpass 5 million
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says COVID-19 cases in Africa have surpassed five million.

The agency said 4.5 million people have recovered from the infection on the continent while 134,000 deaths have been recorded.
“Over 5 million confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent, with more than 4.5 million recoveries and 134,000 deaths cumulatively,” WHO said.
Nigeria records 17 COVID cases
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 17 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

According to the agency’s update for June 15, 2021, the latest positive samples were recorded in three states.
States that reported the infections are Lagos (13), Rivers (3) and Gombe (1).

The NCDC said 14 patients were discharged on Tuesday after recovering from the infection.
With the new figure, a total of 163,483 persons have now recovered from the virus in Nigeria.

For the eleventh day, no new death was recorded.
A total of 167,095 coronavirus infections have been confirmed across the country while the fatality figure stands at 2,117.

Olympians to be disqualified for violating COVID-19 rules
International athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Games may be disqualified and asked to leave Japan if they violate COVID protocol, according to a rule book launched on Tuesday.
The new version of the “playbook” which contains COVID-19 regulations also stipulates that violating the protocol may include withdrawal of accreditation.
“There may be consequences imposed upon you in the event of a breach of these measures…including procedures for revocation of your permit of stay in Japan,” the rule book said.
