FG approves N5.6bn for maintenance and construction of oxygen plants
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N5.6 billion for the establishment of oxygen production plants in the 36 states of the country and the federal capital territory (FCT).
Speaking with journalists after the federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided over by Buhari on Wednesday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, said the project has a completion period of 20 weeks.

He added that the approval was to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made oxygen a critical commodity.
Over 10,000 Nigerians report side effects after COVID vaccination
Faisal Shuaib, executive director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), says 10,027 people reported side effects after they received their first doses of the COVID vaccine.

Shuaib said the side effects include pain and swelling at the site of vaccination, adding that more serious symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, fever, dizziness and allergic reactions have also been reported.
“A total of 10,027 cases of mild Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) have been reported as of May 30th, while 86 cases of moderate to severe incidents have been reported,” he said.
He added that all these individuals have fully recovered.
Online summit secures 1.8 billion vaccine doses for poor countries

About $2.4 billion was raised on Wednesday in an online summit for the purchase of 1.8 billion COVID vaccines for poor countries.
According to GAVI, the donation was made from more than 40 donor governments, the private sector, and foundations “exceeding the funding target and bringing the total pledged to the COVAX AMC to US$ 9.6 billion to date”.

594 doctors died of COVID in India between April and May

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) says at least 594 doctors in India died during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic between April and May.
Delhi, the nation’s capital, topped the list with 107 deaths, followed by Bihar with 96 fatalities and Uttar Pradesh with 67 deaths.

However, the IMA said it is possible that the actual number of fatalities far exceeds these statistics since the association only keeps a record of its members.
Nigeria records 25 infections

The NCDC confirmed 25 COVID-19 infections across five states of the federation on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s figure brings the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country to 166,560.
The states that recorded new cases are Lagos (10), Taraba (9), Kaduna (3), Rivers (2), and Kwara (1).
The NCDC, however, said: “Today’s report includes a backlog of data from Taraba state from 21st March, 2021 to date”.
No death was recorded on Wednesday for the third time this week except on Monday which 28 deaths and 203 coronavirus infections were reported.
Eleven persons were discharged, bringing the total recoveries in the country to 159,946.
