Nigeria vaccinates 440,000 health workers
Faisal Shuaib, executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), says at least 440,000 healthcare workers have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the country.
Shuaib disclosed this on Tuesday during a media briefing in Abuja.

The NPHCDA chief said the 440,000 health workers represent 23 percent of people that had received first the shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.
He said 1,929,237 Nigerians have so far been vaccinated against the infection, adding that administration of the second dose of the vaccine has started.
Vaccine inequality must be corrected for quick COVID recovery in Africa

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), says tackling the inequality in global COVID vaccine distribution is needed for Africa’s sustainable recovery.
Okonjo-Iweala said this on Tuesday at the 2021 edition of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Africa Day Conversations, a virtual forum on achieving sustainable development on the continent.
“But if we are to recover sustainably from this crisis, we have to correct the vaccine inequity that is so evident in the world today, ” she said.
South Koreans to go without masks if vaccinated against COVID

South Korea says masks will no longer be mandatory outdoors for those who have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine.
The move which will be effective from July is expected to encourage residents to get vaccinated.
Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said people who have been vaccinated will be allowed to gather in large numbers.
Nigeria records 37 COVID cases

Nigeria on Tuesday recorded 37 COVID-19 infections.
The new cases were recorded in five states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

This is according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s (NCDC) update for May 25.
Lagos, the epicentre of the pandemic, topped the list with 29 new cases.

Akwa Ibom reported three infections, the FCT recorded two cases while Gombe, Kaduna, and Kano reported one case each.
The agency said data from Akwa Ibom state were recorded over the last three days.

Four deaths were reported on Tuesday, raising the fatality toll to 2,071.
Also, 36 persons were discharged after recovering from the virus.
So far, 166,098 cases have been confirmed in the country while 156,528 persons have been discharged after recovering from the virus.
India couple hires plane for midair wedding to avoid COVID restrictions
A couple in Indian reportedly hired a jet to stage a midair wedding — violating the country’s COVID rule by admitting 161 guests.
India’s civil aviation authority is said to have launched a probe into the incident while the crew of the jet have been suspended.
Most Indian states imposed COVID restrictions allowing only 50 guests at a wedding owing to the spike in infections.
The wedding was reportedly conducted in a SpiceJet plane that flew over the Meenakshi Amman temple from Madurai to Bengaluru.
