Brazil COVID-19 deaths have surpassed 400,000 — becoming the second country globally to pass the mark after the United States.
Brazil ministry of health reported 3,001 deaths on Thursday, raising the total number of fatalities to 401,186.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Carlos Lula, president of national health secretaries, expressed sadness over the rising COVID-19 deaths.
“With sadness all around, Brazil today registers 400,000 victims of COVID-19,” Carlos said.
“The number reflects the pain of families that lost parents, grandparents, children and siblings in a fast, violent and often lonely way.”
France to ease COVID lockdown
President Emmanuel Macron has announced steps to gradually lift COVID-19 restrictions in France.

According to the president, the four steps will commence on Monday and run through June 30.
Macron said Monday will mark the end of certificates required for movement and domestic travel restrictions.
Starting from May 19 curfew will be shifted from 7pm to 9pm and shops, terraces and museums, cinemas and theatres will reopen with limited capacity.
By June 9, curfew will be lifted from 9pm to 11pm. Offices, cafes, restaurants and gyms will be allowed reopen.

France will end curfew by June 30 but nightclubs will remain closed.
France imposed a national lockdown on April 3 owing to the spike in COVID-19 cases.
Indonesia approves Sinopharm vaccine for use
Indonesia on Friday approved Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

According to Reuters, the vaccine will be used in a private vaccination scheme — allowing companies to buy the jab and vaccinate their staff.
Nigeria records 62 COVID-19 infections

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday recorded 62 COVID-19 cases.
The infections were reported in nine states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

States that reported cases on Thursday are Lagos (38), Kaduna (6) and Ondo (6).
Others are Ogun (3) Akwa Ibom (2) FCT (2) Rivers (2) Edo (1) Kano (1) and Oyo (1).

No death was recorded on Thursday; this keeps the fatality toll at 2,063.
So far, Nigeria has confirmed 165,055 cases of COVID-19 while 155,041 people have been discharged.
BioNTech to request approval of COVID-19 vaccine for children
BioNTech, drugmaker, says it will apply for approval of its COVID-19 vaccine for use in children between 12 and 15 years in the European Union (EU).
The approval is expected to be filed in a few days in European Medicines Agency (EMA).
“We have submitted the study data for those aged 12 to 15 for approval in the United States; in Europe we are in the last steps,” Ugur Sahin, BioNTech chief, was quoted to have said.
