FG postpones rollout of second batch of COVID-19 vaccines
The presidential steering committee (PSC) on COVID-19 has postponed the rollout of the second batch of vaccines.
Willie Bassey, director of press, PSC, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
The PSC spokesman said the exercise, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday is postponed owing to unforeseen circumstances.
Bassey, however, failed to give a new date for the rollout of the vaccines.
Saudi Arabia to reopen borders for vaccinated umrah pilgrims
The government of Saudi Arabia says it will start receiving umrah pilgrimage requests from abroad for vaccinated pilgrims starting August 9.
The country had in February 2020, suspended the issuance of visa to foreigners over fears of the coronavirus. Only immunised pilgrims residing in Saudi Arabia were eligible for umrah permits.

However, the kingdom is slowly opening up and has started welcoming vaccinated foreign tourists since August 1.
Quoting Abdulfattah bin Sulaiman Mashat, deputy hajj minister, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said foreign pilgrims must be immunised with a Saudi-recognised vaccine — Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson — and agree to undergo quarantine if necessary.
Nigeria records 471 infections
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 471 people tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday.
The latest positive samples of COVID-19 were recorded in 13 states, according to the agency’s update for August 8, 2021.
Lagos, the hardest-hit state by the pandemic, topped the COVID-19 infection chart with 219 new cases, followed by Akwa Ibom and Ondo with 102 and 37 infections, respectively.
Other states that recorded new positive samples include Oyo (33), Kwara (19), Rivers (16), Ekiti (15), Delta (14), Ogun (7), FCT (5), Niger (2), Edo (1) and Katsina (1).
Two persons were confirmed to have died of COVID-19 complications on Sunday, raising the country’s total fatality toll to 2,187.
According to the agency, 291 new recoveries were reported across the country in the last 24 hours.
A total of 178,086 COVID-19 cases have now been confirmed — out of which 165,763 persons have been discharged.
Lagos LG chairperson begins house-to-house sensitisation of COVID-19
David Odunmbaku, executive chairman, Ojodu LCDA in Lagos state on Sunday commenced a house-to-house sensitisation of residents on the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
Odunmbaku said if residents know how coronavirus is transmitted, it will help to curtail the spread of the virus.
“No doubt about it, we are already in the third wave of the COVID-19; to all Ojodu residents, Lagos residents at large, let us all follow experts’ advice,” he said.
“Let us embrace compulsory use of masks in all public places, keep social distancing, ensure constant hand-washing and use of hand sanitisers.”
Tokyo Olympics records 430 COVID-19 cases as Games end

The Tokyo Olympics organising committee said 26 people linked to the Games tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday — the final day of the Games.
This brings the total number of coronavirus cases since July 1, as compiled by the committee body to 430.
