TY Danjuma, a retired lieutenant general and former chief of army staff, says he would not canvass support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan “because I don’t belong to any party”.
He was speaking to the media on Wednesday after a brief meeting with the president at the presidential villa.
Asked if he was going to canvass support for the president ahead of the elections, he replied: “I don’t canvass. I am not in any of the political parties. The president is the president of the country.”
He and Jonathan met for roughly 10 minutes but the discussions were classified as “confidential” by the former minister of defence.

He was received by the president at the entrance of his official residence at 9.30am.
They held hands and walked into the residence for a closed door meeting.
“Don’t speculate. I came to visit the president and find out how things are going. I have been abroad. I just came back,” he said when he came out of the meeting.

Danjuma, who is being speculated as backing Jonathan’s challenger, Muhammadu Buhari, recently called for the arrest of ex-Niger Delta militants who threatened war if the president was not re-elected.
The ex-militants replied by threatening to hurt his interests in the oil industry.
Danjuma’s company, South Atlantic Petroleum, operates a very lucrative oil block.
