Daria Media has hosted a stakeholder event to assess President Bola Tinubu‘s first year in office.

In a statement, Tomi Olugbemi, programmes officer at Daria Media, said the event generated substantial public engagement and attention, particularly in the areas of economic and security developments.

The live television event called ‘The First Year’ is supported by the MacArthur Foundation and Television Continental. It held on July 17 and 18, 2024.

Kole Shettima, Africa director of the MacArthur Foundation, reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to ensuring accountability in Nigeria.

He added that the foundation “does this by supporting both government institutions and civil society organisations”.

On July 17, Paul Alaje, chief economist at SPM professionals, discussed Nigeria’s economy, covering growth, inflation, and employment.

“We cannot say we are building a robust nation without including critical stakeholders. We must demonstrate that we are one nation by including persons with disabilities because they are critical stakeholders,” Alaje said.

Speaking on insecurity challenges, Usman S.K, former director of army public relations, said that “in most instances, non-state actors are just filling a vacuum, and that’s why there are all the manifestations of security challenges that we have”.

Kadaria Ahmed, CEO of Daria Media, said it was disappointing that government officials did not take up the opportunity to engage with Nigerians “on this credible and independent platform”.

“Virtually all government ministers and officials who were invited to the event cancelled at the last minute,” she said.

Ahmed added that Daria Media is committed to fostering democracy through informed conversations between citizens and government.

In 2016, Lai Mohammed, former minister of information and culture; and Kemi Adeosun, former minister of finance; reviewed the first year of former President Muhammadu Buhari on the programme.

Viewers watched the conversation on TVC news, FRCN, Radio Now, and all of Daria Media’s social media platforms.
