Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara state
The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, a civil society organisation (CSO), has condemned calls for a state of emergency in Zamfara.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Sani Shinkafi, the group’s executive director, said some politicians are sponsoring protests and agitations demanding a state of emergency in the state.
Shinkafi described the call as “unpatriotic and politically motivated attempts” to destabilise the state that is gradually recovering from years of insecurity.
He said Zamfara security has significantly improved under Dauda Lawal, governor of the state, paving the way for economic recovery and infrastructural development that had been stalled for over years-long insecurity.

“Those who call for a state of emergency in an atmosphere of peace, unity, stability, security, and striving economic activities in Zamfara State are enemies of the people on whom sovereignty resides,” the statement reads.
“They should not only be ignored but also questioned by security agents to unravel their agenda and sponsors.
“More importantly, a state of emergency where a governor is suspended or removed along with his deputy and state legislators is illegal, unconstitutional, and undemocratic.

“It is time for all stakeholders to work together in rebuilding Zamfara, strengthening security, and ensuring the people benefit from democratic dividends.
“Zamfara citizens have suffered enough due to protracted armed bandit attacks, kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, and displacement from ancestral homes.
“It is time to rebuild the state, boost economic activities, and provide fruits of democracy that will assuage the people’s sufferings.
“It is time for patriotism. We urge politicians in the state to eschew politics of bitterness and contribute to transforming Zamfara state.

“Governor Lawal is not the issue; he should be allowed to do the job he was elected to do devoid of undue distraction.”
Shinkafi said the group would continue to advocate for peace, unity, progress, sustainable democracy, and development in Nigeria and would never support any action that undermines the constitution, national security, and prosperity.
