Davido, Clarence Peters win double at the MAMAs

The 2014 Mtv Africa Music Awards has come and gone, but it’s thrills will be talked about for a long time to come.

MAMA’s fourth edition at Kwazulu Nattal brought together international and African talents for a spell-binding show.

There were spectacular performances by  Fally Ipupa, Michael Lowman, Don Jazzy, DJ Clock, Beatenberg, DJ Kent, Big Nuz, Toofan, D’Banj, DJ Vigi, DJ Tira, DJ Buckz, Burna Boy, Sauti Sol, Ice Prince, Sarkodie, The Arrows, Khuli Chana, Dr Sid, French Montana, Miguel, Trey Songz, Davido, Uhuru, Mafikizolo, Oskido, Professor, Tiwa Savage, Flavour, Diamond, Phyno and Yuri da Cunha.

Dj Cuppy, Ife Otedola was on the mix. The 21-year-old daughter of oil magnate, Femi Otedola, was also spotted doing what she does best.

Award-winning Aye crooner, Davido, gushed about being 21 and living his dream, as he collected his second award. Davido took home the awards for the Best Male’and Artiste of the Year, while and Nigerian prolific video director, Clarence Peters, received the awards for Best Video and Transform Today by Absolut. South Africa act, Mafikizolo, were also big winners, as they took home the awards for Best Group and Song of the Year.

Nigerian artistes are definitely doing something good in the music world, as they made away with awards for six categories out of the 18 awards for the night. Other Nigerian artistes who took home the MAMA’s were Mavin’s first lady, Tiwa Savage, and high-life prince, Flavour.

Kenya’s fast-rising star and Academy-award-winner, Lupita Nyong’o received the newly-introduced personality of the year award via satellite.

Meanwhile. American stand-up comic act and actor, Marlon Wayans, held  a series of interview sessions prior to the awards ceremony, where he asked some questions based on some of the misconceptions Americans have of Africa. He later explained that the purpose was to change those misconceptions and showcase the real Africa to the world.

Another highlight of the night was the moving acoustic guitar tribute to late Nelson Mandela by Afro-Soul star, Simphiwe Dana.
