The death toll in the road crash involving Nsima Ekere, managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on Thursday morning has risen to three.

A fuel tanker, who “lost control of his vehicle”, had ran into the pilot vehicle in the convoy of the MD, hitting a motorcyclist and his passenger as well.

The passenger on the motorcycle died at the spot from the impact while two of the policemen in the pilot vehicle died later at hospital.

The rider and other victims had sustained various degrees of injuries.

The tragic incident occurred at Essene Junction, opposite Regina Caeli in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

Toye Abosede, the commission’s director of corporate affairs, had earlier confirmed the incident in a statement.

He disclosed that the victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital where they are receiving “urgent medical attention.”

He also said that members of the entourage in other vehicles were unhurt in the unfortunate incident.

Ekere was on his way to Calabar to receive Acting President Yemi Osinbajo when the incident happened.

Osinbajo visited the state to launch some projects.
