Zamfara official says Jangebe schoolgirls yet to be released

An official of the Zamfara state government says students kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Talata-Mafara LGA, are yet to be released.

There are widespread reports of their release which TheCable could not confirm.

All calls to state government officials were neither picked nor returned.

However, Suleiman Tunau Anka, the state commissioner for information and culture, tweeted on Sunday afternoon that the students have not been released.

In a statement issued later on Sunday, Jamilu Iliyasu, press secretary to the governor, also said the schoolgirls had not yet been released.

“Gov. Bello Mohammed MON Matawalle Maradun and his aides have, since Friday when the girls were abducted by gunmen, not rested but been working round the clock making frantic efforts that will lead to the safe release of the victims, and are not happy that someone who does not know the details of the situation will try to further hurt the victims’ parents, government and the security by ridiculing the effort with falsehood,” the statement reads.

“The state government will come immediately and happily inform the world as soon as the girls are released.”

As many as 317 schoolgirls were kidnapped from their hostel last Friday, but seven reportedly escaped.

TheCable understands state government officials are still negotiating with the abductors.
