DHQ appoints new commander for Niger Delta operation

The defence headquarters (DHQ) has appointed Apochi Ogabu Suleiman, a rear admiral, as the commander of Operation Delta Safe in the Niger Delta.

He replaces Joseph Osa Okojie, another rear admiral.

Kingsley Umoh, a colonel, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

“A new commander for Operation Delta Safe in the Niger Delta has been appointed.  He is Rear Admiral Apochi Ogabu Suleiman.  He relieved Rear Admiral Joseph Osa Okojie who has now been reassigned,” the statement read.

“Until his appointment, Rear Admiral Suleiman was the director development at the defence headquarters.  Before that, he was the flag officer commanding, central naval command.

“This change becomes necessary in order to inject new capability to contain the prevailing security threats and provide adequate much needed stability in the region. His appointment is with immediate effect.”

The operation was launched in June at the height of resurgent militancy in the region.
