Digital revolution transforming industries, creating new jobs, says US consul general

Will Stevens, the United States (US) consul general, says the advancement of technology is transforming industries and creating new jobs in Africa.

Stevens spoke on Thursday during the Future Work Africa report launch in Lagos.

According to the consul general, digital technologies create exciting new opportunities and they have the potential of making prosperity accessible to a larger number of individuals.

He said the collaboration between the US and Nigeria involves significant investments in the West African nation’s technology ecosystem by American corporations, alongside utilising the latest technological innovations to tackle critical global challenges.

“In today’s globalised world, all countries are looking to create an eco-system that will foster innovation in order to create jobs for their young people and ensure the future competitiveness of their economy,” he said.

“Digital technologies create exciting new opportunities and have the potential of placing prosperity within reach for more people than ever before.

“The Future of Work in Africa hinges on our ability to embrace change and to adapt. The digital revolution is transforming industries, creating new job categories, and demanding a new set of skills.

“The US and Nigeria partnership includes significant investments in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem by American companies from Microsoft and Meta, and we are using the latest technological innovations to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, in education, healthcare, agriculture, and other vital areas of development and economic growth.”

Stevens commended Nigerian youths for their capability to address the country’s challenges by harnessing their innovative ideas and skills.

“In my nearly two years as consul general, I have traveled around this country and had the opportunity to meet with young Nigerians and listen to what matters to them. I am truly impressed by their ideas on how to build their country,” he said.

Stevens said the US mission is fully committed to supporting the aspirations and dreams of Nigerian youths as they navigate the evolving landscape of employment, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
