On the first episode of the new season of Moments with Mo which aired on Thursday night, the recently engaged actress and TV presenter, Dolapo Oni, shared the funny story of how her fiancé proposed.
“Basically I was shooting desperate housewives in Ajah. I think he went to Abuja the day before or something. Anyways, I was really busy that week so I hadn’t really seen him and he wasn’t really in contact and it was very strange and I remember also thinking that this is very odd. But I was so busy that I didn’t really worry about it and I thought I’ll just find out what the problem was afterwards,” she said.
“So my business partner calls me at about midday and says that we have a business meeting with someone from a project that I had been working on. I was like ‘Great, I should be done here (shooting) by about 2pm’. He was like ‘Cool, let me know when you’re done and you can come and meet me at this restaurant’. As the day went on, I was still filming (past 2pm) and he called back and asked when I’d be done and I said 6pm. At 6pm, I still wasn’t done; until 8:30pm.
“I basically get there at about past 10pm and I am in a very foul mood. I am hungry and tired. I sit down with my business partner. I asked for the guy? He’s like ‘He’s in the bathroom’ and I say no problem and we continue talking.

“Then I noticed that the music suddenly got really loud in the restaurant and they’re playing John Legend’s ‘All of me’. I was just thinking Aah people are trying to eat now what is this why is the music so loud! So I say to my business partner why the **** is the music so loud? He just ignores me and carries on talking about work. Then I noticed that two dancers get up and start doing this classical dance in the middle of the restaurant. I was just like, what are these ones doing? I just thought this is Lagos anything can happen, whatever. Then two more dancers join them and then another two join them and there just dancing. I just ignore it and I am still focused on what I am talking about and I am still in a bad mood.
“The thing is the whole thing was recorded so when I watched it back, I noticed some things. The female dancer had been carried up and the chairs were really low and she was holding a box but I didn’t notice because I was so focused on this business transaction that I was trying to do.
“At this point my fiancé was supposed to be in Abuja. Then I just suddenly see him walking into the room. I wasn’t surprised; I just remember thinking ahah! His shirt is really crisp and white. It was very odd because he just looked very formal. Before I could even say ‘Why you are here’ he was approaching the table then he knelt down. I still didn’t get what was going on. I was just like ‘What are you doing?’ Then he opened the box and I don’t know how to explain it because it was really surreal. It was like everything just became very cloudy and I didn’t see what was inside the box. I was like ‘What are you doing’.

“Then the words came out and all I could hear were muffled sounds. He said it properly but that’s how I heard it. Then I was like ‘Is this a joke?’ Then he asked me to look up and all my friends were standing on the balcony. They have been waiting there since 6pm and they’d all planned it.
“Another thing he did that was really sweet was that he knows I am obsessed with netball. There are times he says let’s go for dinner and I am like no I have play netball. I play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So I think this was a Thursday and he got my netball group to send me a message saying netball was cancelled but they didn’t send it to anyone else. I was already worried what‘s going on and they all pretended and went along with the whole thing.
“Another thing is that I wanted to tell people about the proposal myself but by the time I got into my car because we were going out to celebrate it was on social media.”
Dolapo started her media career as a TV presenter on MNET’s 53 Extra. Since then, she’s branched into acting, featuring in numerous plays and on South African TV series Jacob’s Cross. Dolapo got engaged on December 4 to Adegbite Sijuwade, one of the sons of Oba Okunade Sijuwade.
