The Kano government has indicated its intention to withdraw a suit seeking to stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from probing Abdullahi Ganduje, former governor of the state, over bribery allegations.

In 2018, Daily Nigerian, an online newspaper, published videos of Ganduje allegedly receiving bundles of dollars from contractors which he stuffed into his “babanriga”, a traditional outfit.

The newspaper said the former governor requested $5 million as a bribe, from the contractors who recorded the video.

While the governor debunked the content of the videos, the Kano house of assembly subsequently set up a committee to investigate the allegations.

TheCable had reported that the former attorney general of Kano had filed a suit to restrain the EFCC from investigating the former governor until a suit between Ganduje and Jafaar Jafaar, publisher of the Daily Nigerian, is determined.

The EFCC is the only defendant in the suit.

However, in a new development, Haruna Dederi, Kano attorney-general, has issued a notice of discontinuance via a letter dated July 4 and addressed to Sanusi Musa, a senior advocate handling the suit.

“We write to notify you that Kano state government and the attorney-general of Kano state wish to debrief you of the earlier instructions, given to you to handle the case NO: FHC/KN/71/2023 between attorney-general of Kano state and (EFCC),” the letter reads.

“You and your team members are therefore instructed not to take any further steps on the matter, either by appearing in court or filing any processes in respect of the case.”
