DSS yet to comply with order to release Sowore, says lawyer

Inibehe Effiong, counsel to Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutuionNow Movement, says the Department of State Services (DSS) has been served the court order to release Sowore but that the agency is yet to comply with it.

A federal high court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered that Sowore be released alongside Olawale Adebayo better known as ‘Mandate’.

But, hours after the order was served on the agency, Sowore is yet to be released.

“I can confirm that the SSS has been served with the order of the federal high court ordering their release having perfected their bail conditions,” Effiong told TheCable on Thursday.

“We served them around 10:30 am, and when you serve such order, the release is meant to be immediately. We are expecting them to comply with the order.”

Effiong earlier said attempts were made to serve the order Wednesday evening, but that the DSS declined to accept any document, saying it was closed for business.

“We were at the SSS headquarters this evening to serve them with this order, but they said at that time they could no longer receive court process and asked that we come tomorrow,” he had said.

In September, the court granted Sowore bail on stringent conditions, which were later reviewed.

Sowore was arrested and detained by the DSS in August for planning a nationwide protest.

Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesman, when contacted by TheCable asked that a message be sent to him, but he was yet to give a response as of the time of filing this report.
