Eagles bask in victory over Equatorial Guinea, target CHAN trophy

After beating Equatorial Guinea 3-1 to qualify for the quarter-final of the African Nations Championship, the home-based Super Eagles are determined to win the tournament.

Winger, Emeka Ogbugh, told TheCable that the main objective of the Eagles is to return to Nigeria with the CHAN trophy.

“We know that we have the potential to score a lot of goals,” Ogbugh said.

“We showed everyone that it will be tough to stop us. The title is the ultimate, that’s why we are here in Morocco.

“It was an important win as we wanted to banish the painful memories of Rwanda 2016 when we crashed out in the first round.

“It was tougher than usual, it’s true, but winning matches like these really counts. They didn’t surprise us. You have to adapt to each and every match and we are succeeding at the moment. We made the difference.

“We were great in all the departments, the main thing is the victory.”

Rabiu Ali, Kano Pillars playmaker, dispatched an 83rd minute spot kick to seal the victory, after Anthony Okpotu and Ekundayo Solomon Ojo had scored for the Eagles.

He said when the team were a goal down, the coaches spurred them on to keep fighting.

“I’m glad I’ve done it again for the side. I rose up to the occasion when my coach (Salisu Yusuf) needed me and today (Tuesday) I have done it again when I was needed most,” he told TheCable.

“The team went down against the run of play and it was so disappointing for us as a unit.

“But our coaches kept on encouraging us to fightback and not bother about setback.

“We tried our best and all turned out well at the end of the game.”

Nigeria went into the game as favourites after picking up four points.
