Eaglets trounce Brazil to cruise into semi-finals

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets defeated Brazil 3-0 to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The ever-impressive Victor Osimhen opened the scoring for Nigeria after 29 minutes for his eighth goal of the competition.

Kingsley Michael made it 2-0 in the 30th minute off an assist from Osimhen before Udochukwu Anumudu made it 3-0 in the 34th minute.

Brazil had looked bright in the opening stages but were thwarted by Nigeria’s goalkeeper Akpan Udoh and poor marksmanship with Rogerio and Evander the worst culprits.

They were made to rue those missed chances when Osimhen extended his lead at the top of the goal-scoring charts. The striker met a John Lazarus cross with a fine header, which was deflected off Eder Militao.

The No 9 was instrumental to his team’s second goal few minutes later. The forward hooked a bouncing ball back over his shoulder, with Michael following in. The ball bounced up off the turf and past Juliano.

The Brazilian keeper was deceived yet again by another bounce just four minutes later. This time Anumudu hit a left-footed drive from distance, which skipped off the turf and past the keeper.

The second half was not as eventful with few clear-cut chances. Funsho Bamgboye and Evander came closest to scoring for either side.

Emmanuel Amuneke’s side will now face the winners of the quarterfinal between Mexico and Ecuador in the semi-finals in Concepcion on Thursday.
