The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to take proactive steps in preventing the spread of tuberculosis (TB).
Tuberculosis is a contagious infection that primarily affects the lungs, it spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes or releases fluid containing the bacteria into the air.
Speaking on Monday at an event to mark the 2025 World TB Day in Dutse, Tijjani Ahmad, the NOA director in Jigawa, said it is important for people to get tested whenever they have symptoms like persistent cough, fever or weight loss.
Ahmad said that early detection and treatment are crucial in the fight against TB, noting that the bacteria infection is curable with proper medication adherence.

He emphasised the need for people to cover their mouths and nose when coughing or sneezing, and to ensure proper ventilation in their living spaces.
The NOA urged parents to protect their wards by having them take the Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which helps protect children from severe forms of the disease.
“TB is curable with proper treatment and medication adherence. So, join the fight against TB, get tested, stay informed, and help spread awareness. Together, we can end TB,” Ahmad said.
