A tsunami has hit New Zealand after an earthquake of about -7.8 magnitude occurred in the country on Sunday.
According to CNN, the tsunami happened in the north-eastern coast of the country about two hours after the quake.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck around 50 kilometres (around 30 miles) northeast of the city of Christchurch.
Also Waves of 2.49 meters above usual tide levels were measured near the epicentre by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC).
It is reported that thousands of people have been evacuated to the hinterland, as residents have been warned to stay clear of coastal areas.

The New Zealand Civil Defence took to Twitter to warn that the country’s entire east coast is at threat of dangerous waves that could arrive immediately.
