Ebonyi gov orders arrest of road contractor over ‘poor job’

David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi  state, has ordered the arrest of the contractor working on the Okposi-Umuoghara- Ebiaji Road in Ezza north local government area of the state.

Tonando Nigeria Ltd, the construction firm handling the project, is said to have collected a mobilisation fee of N200 million.

But Umahi expressed dissatisfaction with the level of work done after inspecting the road project on Thursday.

The governor said his administration would not tolerate any contractor playing on the intelligence of the state.

Speaking with journalists later, Fidelis Nweze, commissioner works and transport, said the contractor did not achieve 40 percent completion of the job as required.

He said what they met on ground was less than 10 percent, which had a poor drainage.

“We frown so much at that act because the contractor is supposed to have achieved a minimum 40 percent of that job. What we saw on ground was less than 10 percent of the job,” Nweze said.

“We are not happy about it. And on that note, we have suspended the engineer supervising the job from the ministry for two months for not briefing the ministry and government accordingly. We will be approaching the court for justice.”
