Ebonyi records highest day count as NCDC confirms 571 new COVID-19 infections

For the first time in weeks, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Ebonyi state has jumped by almost 2,000 percent within a 24-hour period.

According to the update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday night, Ebonyi joined the list of states with a record number of daily infections, as 108 samples were confirmed positive.

With the new figure, 11 people were discharged in the state, while the number of active cases moved from five — as of July 11 — to 97 infections by July 12.

Aside from Ebonyi, Cross River which had stayed COVID-19 free for more than four months until July 6 when the state confirmed its first five cases, recorded four new infections on Sunday.

Meanwhile, 571 new samples were confirmed positive in 19 states and the federal capital territory (FCT), while 16 COVID-19 deaths were recorded.

More than 180,000 samples have been tested as of July 12, with 32,558 people confirmed positive across the country, out of which 13,447 patients have recovered.

A total of 740 people have died of COVID-19 complications across the country.

Zamfara and Kogi still have no active case, while Taraba is yet to record any COVID-19 death.

Oyo has also joined the list of states that have confirmed more than 1,000 cases but have discharged over 1,000 patients.

Lagos with 12,427 confirmed infections has discharged 1,897; Kano with 1,309 has recorded 1,030 recoveries, while 1,008 COVID-19 patients have recovered out of Oyo’s 1,726 cases.
