The federal government says it will commence distribution of 42,000 metric tons of grains this week.

This was disclosed in a post on the X account of Abubakar Kyari, minister of agriculture and food security on Monday.

Kyari also announced a plan to release 58,500 metric tons of milled rice from mega rice millers into the market for stabilisation.

The minister extended his compassion to citizens affected by the hardship in the country, reassuring the public the government remains committed to improving the lives and well-being of all Nigerians.

He said the government will begin distributing 42,000 metric tons of grains across all 36 states, as approved by President Bola Tinubu.

“I understand the gravity of the situation, especially with the unfortunate event of foodstuff warehouses looting,” he said.

“Amidst these challenges, I want to assure you that our commitment to your well-being remains resolute.

“We shall commence the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of grains, as approved by Mr. president, across the 36 states of the federation as one of the programs to be rolled-out this week.”

The minister said the government is working with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure the grains are being distributed to the intended recipients and in the correct quantity and packaging.

He acknowledged the strength and resilience of Nigerians and appealed to them to support the president’s efforts to improve the country.

Kyari said the government is committed to addressing current challenges under the leadership of Tinubu, to create a safer and more prosperous future for all Nigerians.

On February 24, 2024, the federal government said the distribution of the food items was delayed due to packaging.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, said the grains, in seven locations of strategic reserve, are being bagged for onward delivery to NEMA.
