Edo Queens have qualified for the final of WAFU B zonal qualifiers of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The 2023/24 Nigeria Women Football League (NWPL) champions defeated Inter FC of Ivory Coast 2-1 in the semi-final held at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, on Tuesday.
Edo Queens had secured a place in the competition’s penultimate round after finishing top of group B. The team scored nine goals without conceding.
They defeated AS Garde of the Republic of Niger 5-0 in their first game. Another 3-0 victory over the Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana, followed by a 1-0 win over Omnisport Etincelle, propelled them to the group’s summit.
Emem Essien put the Nigerian team ahead early in the semi-final game. Blessing Illivieda doubled the team’s lead in the second half from a brilliant corner kick. Despite a late goal from the Ivorians, the Queens held on for a vital win.
The team are on course to secure their first-ever participation at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The Benin Arsenal will face Benin Republic’s Ainonvi FC in the final.
The winner of the qualification tourney will represent WAFU Zone B in the preliminary stage of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, which is billed to take place in Cairo, Egypt, later in the year.
