EFCC arrests 13 for ‘Illegal mining’ in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says its operatives have arrested 13 individuals over alleged illegal mining in Abuja.

In a statement shared on its X account on Friday, the agency said the suspects were apprehended in the Asokoro area of Abuja on Wednesday.

The EFCC said the suspects were taken into custody after operatives acted on credible intelligence.

“The suspects were intercepted and arrested following credible intelligence linking them with the transportation of tons of coal and kaolin in five trucks from Nasarawa State to a site in Kaduna State,” the statement reads.

“They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

In February, the anti-graft agency said it impounded 12 trucks containing illegally mined solid minerals in Kwara.

Michael Nzekwe, EFCC zonal commander in the state, said 41 suspects were arrested at various locations in Share, Banni, Lade, Patigi and Okolowo in Kwara, and Igbeti and Ogbomoso in Oyo.

The EFCC added that solid minerals were being transported outside the country to the detriment of the Nigerian economy.
