EFCC grills Yari, ex-Zamfara governor, over ‘corruption’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has grilled Abdulaziz Yari, a former governor of Zamfara state, over alleged corruption.

TheCable gathered that Yari arrived the commission’s office in Lagos on Monday morning and left hours later, at the end of his interrogation by EFCC operatives.

Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, confirmed that the former governor was interrogated following an invitation when contacted by TheCable.

He, however, declined to give further details regarding the incident.

Yari has been in the news for alleged corrupt practices since he left office as governor of Zamfara in 2019.

In December 2019, Abdullahi Lawal, the zonal head of the EFCC in Sokoto, confirmed that the commission is investigating how N200 billion was used during Yari’s administration.

“EFCC is currently investigating over 60 cases from Zamfara state in relation to the past administration. These include cases against individuals, public and private organisations, as well as government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs),” Lawal had said.

“The total sum involved is over N200 billion. Several bank accounts connected to fraudulent activities have been frozen by the commission.”

Only last week, the federal high court in Abuja ordered the final forfeiture of some of his funds which were said to be proceeds of crime.

Among the funds forfeited include $56,056.75; N12.9 million; N11.2 million; $301,319.99; N217,388.04 and $311,872.15.
