The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) has started issuing certificates to successful applicants.

SCUML is domiciled under the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with its activities focused on registration, certification and monitoring of designated non-financial institutions (DNFIs), such as luxury good dealers, legal practitioners, audit firms, hotels, tax consultants, among other such businesses.

In July, the commission had explained that the delay experienced with issuance of SCUML certificates was an administrative measure to ensure total compliance with the Money Laundering Act 2022.

President Muhammadu Buhari had, in May, signed the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Bill, 2022, into law.

In a statement on Thursday, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesperson, announced that the unit has commenced issuance of certificates.

“In line with its new status as a Unit fully domiciled in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  EFCC, and statutory responsibilities under the new-fangled Money Laundering Act,  2022, the EFCC is delighted to inform the general public that the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering,  SCUML, has commenced issuance of certificates to every successful applicant,” the statement reads.

“It would be recalled that issuance of certificates was suspended, as an administrative measure, to bring SCUML into alignment with its new  regulatory framework,  environment and obligations.

“Interested applicants can now come forward with their application for the new certificates.

“The EFCC wishes to assure the public of a more professional and efficient SCUML.”
