Egwuekwe signs with Hapoel Tel Aviv

Super Eagles defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, has signed for Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv from Warri Wolves.

The 25-year-old defender signed for an undisclosed fee on Friday after successful medicals. He has been assigned jersey number three.

“Nigerian Egwuekwe Azubuike landed in the morning in Israel and signed after passing medical tests earlier this week,” the club website announced.

This move has all but buried the speculation that Barclays Premier League side, West Ham were on the verge of signing the towering defender.

It is highly unlikely Egwuekwe makes his league bow when his club takes on Hapoel Petach Tikva this weekend.

Hapoel Tel Aviv currently competes in the Israeli Premier League and plays its home matches at the Bloomfield Stadium.

To date, the club has won thirteen championships and sixteen State Cups.

Since 1995 the club has been involved in European club competitions, and has the highest rank among all Israeli clubs.

They have pulled off giant-killing feats since then with victories over Chelsea, Milan, Hamburg, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Rangers, and Celtic.

Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, played for the club between 2007 and 2011.
