Eight health workers test positive for COVID-19 in Ogun

The Ogun state government has announced that eight health workers of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Segun Orisajo, the FMC head of public relations and information, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Orisajo said the eight hospital workers that contracted the virus included medical doctors, nurses and an administration personnel.

He said the affected staff were part of the team which had contact with a two-and-a-half-year-old coronavirus positive patient currently receiving treatment at the centre’s isolation ward.

They were detected during the round of contact tracing carried out by the infection control team of the hospital.

According to Orisajo, Adewale Musa-Olomu, the medical director of FMC, Abeokuta, said “although none of the staff is asymptomatic, they have been asked to proceed on self-isolation”, and are receiving basic treatment.

Musa-Olomu prayed for the quick recovery of the workers and expressed the confidence that they will soon return to their duty posts.

Orisajo added that the medical director restated his earlier assurances on the safety of the medical centre for workers and patients.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as of Thursday, Ogun state had recorded 733 confirmed cases, out of which 263 are active cases, 453 people have been discharged, while 17 deaths have occurred.
