Eight ‘hoodlums’ arrested over attack on police station in Abia

The Nigeria police force (NPF) says it has arrested eight persons and recovered arms and ammunition from suspected hoodlums who carried out an attack on Abayi police station in Aba, Osisioma Ngwa local government area of Abia state. 

TheCable had reported how suspected hoodlums invaded the police station on Tuesday morning, and set it ablaze.

According to a statement on Wednesday, Frank Mba, force public relations officer, said two officers — Vincent Gonze, an assistant superintendent of police, and Emmanuel Okoronkwo, a sergeant — died as a result of the attack.

He also noted that four of the attackers were killed during the incident.

“The Police in Abia State Command successfully neutralised (4) four attackers, arrested (8) eight persons and recovered arms and ammunition from hoodlums who carried out an unprovoked attack on Abayi Police Station, Aba in Osisioma Ngwa LGA of Abia State in the early hours of 23rd February, 2021,” the statement reads.

“It is worth noting that the hoodlums, numbering about two hundred persons, armed with AK47 rifles and machetes invaded the station and set part of it ablaze with the aid of petrol bombs and other explosives.

“Following the attack, two officers, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Vincent Gonze, and Sergeant Emmanuel Okoronkwo unfortunately paid the supreme price.”

The force PRO said Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, has directed all commissioners of police in the country to ensure the protection of lives and properties in their areas of focus.

Mba also added that investigation on the attack is ongoing, and the suspects will be prosecuted in due course.
