Elder statesmen to Tinubu: Akeredolu’s absence has left huge governance gap in Ondo

Ondo elders and leaders led by Reuben Fasoranti, have asked President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the political situation in the state, amid the absence of Rotimi Akeredolu.

The elders said the absence of Akeredolu, Ondo governor, has “caused a lack of sustained good governance” in the state.

BACKGROUND

Akeredolu returned to Nigeria in the first week of September after a three-month medical leave in Germany.

The governor, who landed in Ibadan, the Oyo capital, has since been working from the state.

The absence of Akeredolu from Ondo has become a source of concern to many stakeholders within and outside the state.

Amid the absence of the governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, deputy governor, is facing an impeachment process initiated by the Ondo house of assembly over allegations of gross misconduct.

‘THERE SHOULD BE NO IMPEACHMENT’

To discuss issues affecting the state, the elders and leaders held an emergency meeting, which was convened by Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere group.

In a statement signed by Fasoranti and Bakkita Bello, secretary of the group, the Ondo elders said none of the elected officials, including the governor and deputy, should be impeached.

The elders said a lasting solution is required for the political situation in Ondo state.

“The elder statesmen called for prayers for the improved health of the Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Odunayo Akeredolu,” the statement reads.

“The elders noted that without doubt his absence has caused a lack of sustained good governance in the state.

“There should be no impeachment of the governor nor the deputy governor by the house of assembly.

“All unelected persons should allow the three arms of government to find a lasting solution to the current crisis.

“The rule of law should be followed by all stakeholders as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.

“The elders also call on the state/national leadership of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, to provide the required guide to those in government as well as ensure discipline amongst their fold.”
