The senate says it will not abandon Nigerians as they face a new hike in electricity tariff.
On Wednesday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under the B and A classifications.
The commission said customers who receive 20 hours of electricity supply daily will pay N225 per kilowatt (kW), starting from April 3.
The new rate is just about three times the existing figure which was N66 per kilowatt (kW).

Speaking with reporters in Abuja on Thursday, Yemi Adaramodu, spokesperson of the senate, said the relevant committees of the red chamber are studying the development and will make recommendations in plenary when they resume from their Easter and Sallah break.
Adaramodu said the upper legislative chamber would not support any policy that would add to the economic hardship already being faced by citizens.
“The relevant senate committees on power are studying the situation. You know we are currently in recess now,” the lawmaker said.

“When we resume, they will present their findings to the senate at plenary. We won’t abandon Nigerians.”
The upper legislative chamber is currently investigating the status of N2 trillion meant to be paid for electricity subsidy and the progress of the metering in the country.
