Elon Musk, billionaire and owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), has sued ChatGPT maker, OpenAI and Sam Altman, its chief executive officer (CEO), for allegedly breaching their establishment contract.
In the lawsuit filed in San Francisco, on Thursday, the Tesla founder alleged that Altman violated the artificial intelligence company’s original mission statement by turning OpenAI into a profit-making venture after an agreement to make it a non-profit enterprise.
Musk alleged a breach of contract, saying Altman and Greg Brockman, the co-founder originally approached him to make an open-source, non-profit company.
However, the startup established in 2015, is now more focused on making money, with Musk accusing them of putting profits over helping humanity.

In the suit, Musk prayed for a court ruling asking OpenAI to make its research and technology available to the public and prevent the startup from using its assets, including its most advanced AI model GPT-4, for the financial gains of Microsoft or any individual.
Musk alleged OpenAI has turned away from the not-for-profit mission with its latest AI model, GPT-4, which it hasn’t released to the public.
According to reports, Microsoft has invested billions into OpenAI, which has created commercial ties between both companies.

On November 17, 2023, Altman was fired by OpenAI’s former board as a way of trying to defend the company’s mission to develop AI that benefits humanity.
However, a few days later, on November 22, 2023, Altman returned to the company with a new board.
OpenAI is reportedly planning to appoint more board members in March 2024.
