Energy prices, bus fares rise in England on New Year’s Day

In Great Britain, buses are the most commonly-used form of public transport

Billpayers in England woke up on New Year’s Day to upward adjustments in energy prices, with further increases slated for the second quarter of the year.

Ofgem, the industry regulator — similar to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) — removed the price cap, raising the typical bill per household for gas and electricity to £1,738 a year, up front £1,717.

The new rate is almost double the pre-Covid levels and is expected to rise by another 3 percent in April 2025.

Meanwhile, bus fare has also increased from £2 to £3 per day for single trips.

The fare was capped at £2 by under the Conservative government in the wake of the cost of living crisis.

The new £3 cap will be in place for the whole year on most bus journeys in England.
