England claim third place

victor reporting

Fara Williams scored an extra-time penalty as England beat Germany 1-0 in Edmonton to win the third place play-off at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The game, which was devoid of any clear-cut chances, looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out until Tabea Kemme brought down substitute Lianne Sanderson in the box.

The referee wasted no time to point to the spot and Williams kept her cool to send goalkeeper Nadine Angerer the wrong way from the spot-kick, despite the distracting presence of Alexandra Popp.

The win was England’s first-ever victory over Germany – in 21 attempts.
