EPL: Aribo, Onuachu score in rare Southampton win as Liverpool extend lead

Joe Aribo (front) celebrates his opening goal in Southampton's 2-1 victory over Ipswich

Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu, Super Eagles of Nigeria players, scored both goals for relegation-threatened Southampton in their 2-1 English Premier League (EPL) win over Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday.

Aribo scored the opener before Onuachu delivered the winner with a poacher’s striker after Laim Delap had restored parity earlier in an encounter billed as a relegation six-pointer.

Aribo put Southampton ahead with a half-volley in the 21st minute, latching on to a deflected ball that sat nicely for the midfielder in the hair to deliver a shot that bounced just in front of the goalkeeper before finding the back of the net.

Ten minutes later, the Saints saw their lead nullified by their hosts, but Onuachu made himself the hero three minutes from time.

The lanky forward reacted fastest to bundle home a spilled shot on the rebound to secure all three points for Southampton with his second goal in the last three matches.

Victory is Southampton’s first league win since November 2024, ending a 13-match barren sequence. However, they remain rooted to the bottom of the league with nine points from 24 matches.

In other games, Ola Aina, Nigerian international defender, was one of the best performers as Nottingham Forest bounced back from 5-0 loss last week to destroy Brighton 7-0. Chris Wood scored a hattrick as Forest continued to hold on to the third spot on the EPL log. League leaders Liverpool rode on a Mohamed Salah brace to wwin2-0 at Bournemouth and extend their lead at the top to nine points.
