EPL: Aribo scores in Southampton’s loss to Chelsea as Arsenal defeat United

Joe Aribo scored his first goal of the season in Southampton's 5-1 loss to Chelsea

Joe Aribo’s first-half goal was mere consolation as Southampton lost 5-1 to Chelsea in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at St Mary’s stadium on Wednesday night.

Aribo scored Southampton’s equaliser in the 11th minute after Axel Disasi had put Chelsea ahead a few minutes before.

The Super Eagles midfielder was at the right place to finish off a well-worked run and cross from Kyle Walker-Peters.

But goals from Christopher Nkuku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho put the match beyond Southampton, who stay rooted at the bottom of the league.

Manchester City scored twice in the first half to secure a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.

Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne were at their best in recent times. The duo put Man City in a commanding two-goal lead before Jeremy Doku added a third to secure all three points.

Pep Guardiola’s side ended a run of defeat in four league matches. It is also the team’s first win of seven games in all competitions.

While Man City celebrated a rare win, Liverpool were held to a rare draw by Newcastle United following a 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park.

The six-goal thriller saw leads exchanged by both side until Newcastle stole a point in the final minutes of the encounter. Mohamed Salah scored a brace after Curtis Jones’ leveller to put the league leaders ahead but Fabian Schar ensured a share of the points.

The outcome means Liverpool dropped points for the first time in nine matches, the Reds have 35 points from 14 matches, seven ahead of second-placed Chelsea who thrashed Southampton 5-1 with five different goalscorers.

Arsenal also handed Ruben Amorim his first loss as Man United boss with a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to goals from two well-worked corner kicks. Jurrien
