Chelsea and Man City played 4-4 draw in their first encounter of the 2023/24 EPL season

Chelsea scored a penalty in added time to share the points with Manchester City in an enthralling English Premier League (EPL) encounter that finished 4-4 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Both sides scored twice in each half with Erling Haaland (brace), Manuel Akanji and Rodri netting for the EPL champions. Chelsea however had four different scorers, with Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling, Nicholas Jackson and Cole Palmer all rattling Man City’s nest.

Haaland put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead from the penalty spot early on before Chelsea scored two goals in five minutes to turn the screw on the EPL champions. Thiago Silva equalised with a glancing header from a corner kick before Sterling slotted in at the back post to put Chelsea ahead for the first time on the night.

Akanji scored with a header following a short corner routine on the stroke of halftime to level before Haaland converted a low cross to put Man City back in front.

More goals were traded towards the end as Jackson restored parity again on 68 minutes via a rebound.

Rodri thought he had won it for the Etihad side with a deflected strike from 25 yards for 4-3.
Palmer however ensured the points were shared in added time when he expertly converted a penalty kick awarded for a foul by Ruben Dias.

The full-time whistle brought an end to the exhilarating encounter as Man City stayed top with 28 points from 12 matches, one ahead of second-placed Liverpool, while Chelsea moved up to 10th position.

Liverpool secured a 3-0 win over Brentford at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah (brace) and Diogo Jota scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Elsewhere, Taiwo Awoniyi scored but could not save Nottingham Forest from losing 3-2 at West Ham United.
